ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF AKROTIRI - THE BURIED CITY
VVisitors have the unique opportunity to walk through a section of the unearthed prehistoric city of Akrotiri. The site was first settled between 4,000 - 3,500 B.C. (mid-Neolithic period). By the 2,000 B.C. the once small Neolithic village had developed into a highly advanced and of great strategic importance merchant harbor.
During the mid-Cycladic period (2,000 - 1,650 B.C.), Akrotiri was one of the most prominent harbors adding the trade of commodities and ideas from the east to the south and to Greece.
Around 1650 B.C. life and the activity of the inhabitance were changed forever after the catastrophic eruption of the volcano.
Only a small portion of the settlement has been excavated to date. The multilevel buildings, the intricate plumbing systems, the cobble stone streets, the squares, the murals, the weapons, pottery etc. that were saved under meters of pumice reveal to us today the true level of technology and artistry of this 4000 thousand year old civilization

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF ANCIENT THIRA
This settlement is strategically situated at the very peak of Mesa Vouno (369m altitude). This naturally isolated spot was ideal for the Lakomadedonian or Spartan settlers in the 9th century B.C. The first king to rule this settlement was Thiras. The construction of this settlement truly impressive as it follows the slopes of the mountain. The architecture itself follows the Spartan style rather that the delicate and extravagantly decorated constructions that one sees in Akrotiri. Impressive structures include the amphitheater, the burial grounds, baths, gymnasiums and the complex sewage system.
It is advised to have a guide book with you because organized tours are difficult to find.

SKAROS
Skaros or "Roka" as noted in several travel log of the 1400's appears to be first of five castles that was established on the island. The fortress and the rule of the area were granted to the family Varotsi by Marco Sanoudo of Naxos. Skaros served as the capital of the island for several years. During Venetian times, the castle on Skaros and the community that had developed on the slopes survived as a prototype for the castles that would follow. The geography of the area provided perfect fortification as we may see even today:
• There was only one very narrow land passage from Skaros to the main island
• The plateau where the main castle was located provided the perfect watchtower with a 360 degree view against any raids from land or from sea
• Very abrupt slopes of pumice like volcanic sediment that met the sea were not stable for pirates attempting any raids from the sea

Records of voyagers of the time noted that the community was autonomous comprised primarily of Catholics of every trade: merchants, servants, barbers, etc.
Today, only ruins remain, you must look carefully to identify portions of the old roads, walls, and buildings. Caution, also must be taken given that the paths are very narrow!
